From the sewing workshop
A winter’s daydream from head to toe
Hat designer Elisabeth Spatz-Distler lifts the lid on her sewing box and tells us how her Högl shoes and her sewing machine work together.
Wisps of fog drift over the Danube. All of Passau is wearing grey, muted colours. I like these nuanced shades: stone, soft yellow, nude, pale green... They’re a way of adding subtle ac-cents to your outfit, and expressing your personality. Especially when it comes to hats.
Elisabeth Spatz-Distler is a hat designer with passion. She owns a small gallery in the Lower Bavarian city of three rivers, Passau. That’s where she displays her handmade works of art: unique creations which bring together the hat wearer and the artist’s sense of self and creative identity.
Slowly, I approach my workshop. As I step out, I glance at my feet. My new ankle boots. Black, classic shape, heeled. Högl knows how to combine these elements in an ultramodern way. It suits me perfectly. Black leaves space for my creations, gives my feet shape, allows colours to shine. Like tail lights in rush-hour traffic. Black and white - foils for contrasts, ex-periments, unusual design.
Just like the hat I’m working on today. It’s being taken on a cruise soon. Protection from the sun and stability in the wind, sophisticated elegance, and the option to style it in different ways using ribbons, scarves and flowers. A challenge.
Off to the sewing machine, where several meters of straw braid await: corn yellow, white, black. Unique, like everything else in my workshop. As individual as my customers.
"Sewing places intense demands on your hands and feet. But my shoes are up to the job. Great leather, solid support.”
During a break from sewing, a quick glance through the door and down to the River Inn. The few rays of sunshine create magical reflections and bright colours. This breath of spring serves as my inspiration for a new display window. The dream of the cruise still quietly reso-nates. White and pale yellow with colourful silk.
I should round off the day on that note. Perhaps with a fruity cocktail in roots, the bar across the road? I quickly change my hat and shoes. Heels in slate grey. Högl demonstrates its ex-pertise once more.
Subtle elegance to make you feel good at the end of a long day at work, after hours spent sitting, standing or rushing from A to B. Only real experts in their field can master that. And so I sit there, enjoying the twilight and the non-alcoholic cocktail Fabi has made me. And my mind wanders. To faraway beaches, warmth, light and relaxation. And new headwear crea-tions which capture all of these things...
