Salzburg, City of Mozart

A world-famous Baroque gem

Elegant, sophisticated, and oh so charming - it can only be Salzburg. The city first gained worldwide renown as the home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and later as the filming location for ‘The Sound of Music’. The heart of Salzburg: the Baroque old town

The best way to get to know Salzburg is to take a walk through the old town, half of which (to the left of the river) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this historical centre, you can encounter numerous architectural masterpieces and landmarks without the need for a tour guide.
The magnificent mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the city. Perched atop one of them is Fortress Hohensalzburg, built in 1077. Today, this famous landmark is a must-see for every visitor and can be reached either on foot or from the comfort of a cable car.

In the narrow streets of the old town, you’ll also discover many small shops and factories still preserving traditional craftsmanship. Master bakers, furriers, liqueur producers, weavers and tailors still manufacture their products just as they did hundreds of years ago. Alongside these traditional and historical manufacturers, many modern fashion labels, international luxury brands and emerging young designers are also making their mark on the old town.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Salzburg's most famous export

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is inextricably linked with Salzburg, having composed over 350 of his works in his home city. His birthplace at Getreidegasse 9 is one of the most popular photo spots for visitors. The building now plays host to a modern permanent exhibition across three floors documenting the career of one of the world’s most influential and performed composers.

Following in the footsteps of ‘The Sound of Music’

Awarded five Oscars, the Hollywood film ‘The Sound of Music’ was filmed in Salzburg in 1965. So it’s no wonder that 300,000 fans of this popular film visit the city each year to see the original filming locations, such as the Mirabell Palace. As some of the locations are outside the city, visitors can also take a ‘Sound of Music’ bus tour. Strangely enough, although ‘The Sound of Music’ was an international hit, very few Austrians have actually seen the film.
