Falco, a musical genius Made in Austria
It has been twenty years since a car accident put a devastatingly early end to the career of Hans Hölzel - Falco's birth name. Yet his contributions to music are, and remain, staples of the music world – no party would be complete without his global hit "Rock Me Amadeus". He also achieved something no Austrian has accomplished since, reaching the top of the American Billboard charts.
The fascination surrounding Austria's most successful pop export of all time has remained constant to this day.
As early as the age of five, Falco was confirmed by the Vienna Music Academy as having perfect pitch. This ability – being able to pick any note desired – paved the way for his musical career. Largely uninterested in school, he dropped out of the Vienna Music Conservatory after just one semester. He wanted to become a "real musician" – a dream that would later come true.
In the Berlin and Vienna music scenes, Falco spent some years experimenting in numerous ensembles and as a solo artist. That’s when he got the idea for his stage name, calling himself "Falco" after the East German ski jumper Falko Weißpflog.
In 1981, the talented artist was discovered and signed by a record label, marking the beginning of his meteoric rise to stardom. "Der Kommissar", the single released that same year, catapulted Falco into the European charts and received international acclaim. The hit single sold over seven million copies, but his big break came with "Rock Me Amadeus". To date,it is the only German-language song to have reached the top of the US charts. Yet with this worldwide hit came pressure. Falco, sensitive in real life, despite appearing confident and cool on stage, was afraid of having reached the high point of his career. Indeed, Falco never achieved the same groundbreaking success of "Rock Me Amadeus", dying far too early in 1998 as the result of an accident, but his musical legacy lives on.
Captivating hits and glitzy costumes
"FALCO - Das Musical" movingly, and very emotionally, recalls the life of the music legend. It not only beautifully portrays his rise to fame, but also reveals the deep inner turmoil that plagued the artist. Alexander Kerbst, in the lead role, masterfully belts out the Viennese musician's unforgettable hits. Kerbst has perfected Falco’s body language and accent and for two hours, the virtuoso is brought back to life on stage.
