A romantic winter in Vienna

Winter wonder in the city of the waltz

Wintertime brings an incredible range of cultural offerings and advent activities to the Austrian capital.

From mid-November until Christmas, the whole city takes on a magical, romantic, festive atmosphere. Strolling through the quaintly lit narrow streets of the old town, you’ll catch the sweet scent of Christmas baking, hot punch and roasted almonds, and truly feel the romance in the air. The weeks leading up to Christmas are made for spending time with loved ones. Whether you fancy wandering through Vienna’s traditional Christmas markets, eating dinner around an open fire, relaxing into a wellness break or skating around at the Vienna Ice Dream, there really is something for everyone.

Wrapped up nice and warm in a cosy pair of Högl winter boots, we’ll take you on a romantic winter tour through Vienna that will be sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

Christmas markets

The most famous Christmas market in Vienna is the Weihnachtstraum at Rathausplatz (the town hall square). It attracts thousands of visitors each year. An impressive candle-lit archway greets visitors at the entrance, and as you wander through, there are around 150 stalls selling Christmas gifts, tree ornaments, handicrafts and gastronomic treats. Not far away, between the Art History and Natural History museums, is the Weihnachtsdorf (Christmas village) at Maria-Theresien-Platz. There is also a romantic Christmas village on the Vienna University campus, which is only a short walk away.

The Weihnachtstraum at Rathausplatz is open daily between 15th November and 26th December 2019: Sunday to Thursday 10:00 - 21:30; Friday and Saturday 10:00 - 22:00.

Close to the Graben and Högl’s flagship store, you’ll find the city’s oldest and most traditional Christmas market: the Altwiener Christkindlmarkt on the Freyung. First held in 1772, today the market offers handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional cribs and ceramics.

The Altwiener Christkindlmarkt is open daily from 16th November to 23rd December, 10:00 - 21:00.

The Christmas market at the Spittelberg is particularly idyllic. Nestled in the narrow streets of the Biedermeier quarter, it has many stalls selling handicrafts as well as countless delicious gift ideas.

For an Christmassy excursion a little further afield from the city, why not visit Schloss Hof just east of Vienna? The baroque palace offers visitors an attractive advent programme and its own large-scale market.

Feuerdorf

Fancy a winter grill by the Danube canal? The Feuerdorf (Fire Village) is a set of 13 wooden huts near the Danube canal, each with an open fire pit inside. In a group of 12, you can enjoy a cosy evening with delicious grilled delicacies. On cold winter days, the atmosphere is especially snug and romantic - perfect for a relaxed evening with friends and family.

The Hofburg New Year’s Eve Ball is the perfect way to bring in the new year with glitz, glamour, pomp and, of course, a loved one at your side. Wellness

Many of us crave a little time out in the winter months, dreaming of escaping the hustle and bustle of the city in the run-up to Christmas. Nothing could be more fitting than a fully personalised beauty break. Many of Vienna’s day spas offer relaxation for body and mind - like little oases of calm in the heart of the city. The most beautiful ports of call are the luxury hotels in Vienna, which also welcome day visitors: Sacher Boutique Spa, So SPA, Sans Souci Spa, and Kempinski The Spa.

From January to March, when the Christmas markets are over, the heart of Vienna transforms into a fairytale ice landscape spanning over 9000 m2. Light shows and music make for magical winter entertainment for skating fans of all ages.
